And then...

Since the pictures I upload have a habit of not being able to be enlarged, I have created a new blog for the last experiment.

It is located here:

A German Landscape: Interpretation

I chose the following picture as the inspiration for forming my initial landscape.
From this, I took features of the land instead of just trying to copy it. For example, I noticed that the valley was continually rising to the right. I also noticed that you can't see to far beyond the left of the image, meaning anything could be happening. Even so, I gathered that the terrain would slowly become flatter and flatter as that is what the overall slope suggests. I also wanted to create a terrain that highlighted the colder Germany. In other words, I made the environment Winter. Even though it is early stages in the design yet, I have an idea of how the cold climate will help aid in the transmission of the idea of power. This is what I ultimately came to.
I am toying with a few ideas in my mind with this landscape. The inclusion of the river makes for an interesting dip to perhaps build my bridge over. Even so, I am unsure about this. Furthermore, I am not sure whether to make this more of an urban environment or a heavily vegetated one. Either way, I need to find the appropriate brushes to convey these two different landscape features.

Experiment 2 Submission Post: Ignorance, Stupidity and Greed

The Three Quotes:
The brief asked for three quotes, but only two clients. I ultimately decided on Hawkings and Darwin. I thought about their quotes in a bit more detail than Kueppa's, that is why hers is separate from the others and not in prose.

Nicole Kueppa: "I love working with passionate people who want to help address climate change and poverty by thinking and experimenting outside the square."
------------------
In response to the question "What worries you the most about the future of the universe?", Stephen Hawking replied:
"I am not worried about the future of the universe. The universe will continue whatever happens, but the future of the human race and of life on earth is much less certain. We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity."

In conjunction with this idea, Charles Darwin contributes an interesting point:
"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science."

Through these two sharp minds, it is clear that selfishness and incomprehension is what is endangering the human race and holding back science. Because of continued aggravation of Earth, science is always one step behind finding a problem.

18 Sketch Axonometrics
36 Custom Textures
The textures were created around the ideas I gathered from my quotes, being ignorance, stupidity and greed. I decided to translate these ideas to my textures. The rows of textures you see below are structured as follows:
1. Ignorance: Even though the texture is complicated, no two lines ever meet; they are ignorant of each other.
2. Stupidity: I used the 'stupid' textures to really go crazy. There were no measured or precise elements in these textures. They are crazy, spontaneous and stupid.
3. Greedy: The texture progressively takes up more and more space. It is greedy.
4. Ignorance: The idea for this was similar to the first. Despite looking complicated, no two elements from either side of the square are touching.
5. Stupidity: Again, much like the first idea but a little more simplistic.
6. Greedy: This was a more measured attempt at creating a texture that represented greed, even though the "space taking" idea was used again.

The Landform, the Image Captures and the Architecture:
The idea behind my architecture was Ignorance, Stupidity and Greed. There is an element to my architecture that accompanied each of these ideas. They have been highlighted with an appropriate texture. I.e. The piece or architecture that takes up a lot of space is highlighted with a greedy texture. The architecture is also only supported by a central pillar, making it perfect for the landform I embedded it in.
The idea behind my landform was to have a very steep terrain that also explored the ideas. For example, the fact that the architecture is surrounded by a massive crescent shaped bay fortifies the idea of ignorance, as it segregates the architecture from the greater world.
As my architecture and landform were created for Hawking and Darwin, I felt it necessary to explore their philosophies in the ramp structure. Both of them are of such high intelligence and their minds can compute many different ideas at once, practically all of which have had some bearing on the scientific world. I created a ramp that was long, windy, steep, shallow, sharp, blunt, rising, falling ect., thus incorporating as many different terrain 'ideas' as I could, which is similar to the way these mens minds work.
Their two quotes speak of a an uncertain future that could end in destruction. I also tried to include this idea along the ramp, as I have included some dead trees, and bland rocks along the way. This idea is most prevalent however at their meeting place, which is outstretched, high over water. Here, the dead trees add to a sense of the macabre, and the fact that it is so outstretched makes it seem like it's at the centre of the world. I imagined this space being centralised because if these two people were ever to meet, the conjunction of their ideas would be centre most to the continuation of our species and planet.

The Black Box

I chose this slide for two reasons.
Firstly, on the left, there is a visual representation of an unconstrained tunnel structure. This is an idea that I would like to interpret and include in my assignment. For example, I could make an element of the structure completely uninhibited and drastic. I think this relates well to my inspiration from the word "stupidity".
Secondly, the image on the right motivates me as far as my sketches are concerned. It is an interesting way of drawing and the shapes are rectilinear. I really like the colour palette and the different shades of orange.

Electro Liquid Aggregation of Quotes

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge but I am not worried about the future of the universe. I love working with passionate people who want to help address climate change and poverty. Even so, it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. However, I believe that the universe will continue whatever happens, but the future of the human race and of life on earth is much less certain. By thinking and experimenting outside the square, we can save ourselves from the danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity.

Axonometric and Sketchup

I haven't been able to get Crysis running smoothly just yet, so I have sublimated by including an image of my form from sketchup.

This is the sketch my model is currently based off.
This is what I modelled.

Description:
The idea of my design stems from the words Form and Fork.
The above datum storey is made completely of glass to provide an openness and so that also the complete form is visible from all angles. Furthermore, the different colours of glass are meant to interact to form a fuller spectrum as the sun moves across the sky. These colours will also be visible through the entire form.
The stairs on this level represent form in a few different ways. Firstly, there are two intertwining spiral staircases which resemble a twist. This is a separate idea that comes into my mind when thinking of form, besides contortion which is what the overall structure is based on. One of the spiral staircases has perfect stairs, but there are different sized balustrades protruding from them showing that form doesn't have to be perfect. This idea is continued even further on the second spiral staircase which has stairs of different depths. Furthermore, the textures that have been applied to the random stairs are there to surprise the user and to also exemplify my point of form not having to be perfect.
The below datum storey is made completely of stone. The reason why there are so many pyramids protruding out of various parts of the design is to create many different angles on the ceiling of the space. Furthermore, as these protrude through the datum, they provide natural light to the underground space as everything above ground is made of glass. The angles that are visible in the ceiling are also continued on the stairs in this space. The stairs are awkwardly shaped with many acute angles. This is continued in the balustrade.

Textures.

A video, a developed model and the artists works...

I really like the previous idea, so I decided to develop it a little further, more namely in the area of rendering.
After experimenting with the "X Ray" view on sketchup, I had the idea of making the entire structure glass. This eventually formed into the idea of coloured glass. From here, I hypothesised that if there were different colours of glass, as the sun shone through them, the colours would mix and create a fuller spectrum. As my upper storey has three bubbles attached to it, I decided to make each bubble a different primary colour. Since there are many different angles and overlapping areas, I figured this would be the best way to create a complete spectrum of colour.
This lead me to think of the idea of transparency, and it was this idea that I searched in youtube to find an interesting video. I found a video on Transparent Cement, which is a cement that is almost as strong as the real deal, but it can let light through it. In certain lights, it looks completely opaque, but when you hold it up to light it seems porous.

The next few images are of the respective artists studio spaces with their artwork in them. You can just start to see the different rendering I have used throughout.

This brings me to my developed sketchup model.

Second Draft.

This is my second draft. For this attempt, I changed the top storey completely to try and fit better with my word FORM. I kept my idea for the underground storey similar but made it more angular to fit better with my word FORK. This is also the reasoning behind why the underground studio space is completely different; it is more angular. I also made the haphazard pyramids attached the studio space extra high so they would poke through the datum in a later model. Also note that the stairs are a different shape and rendered in stone. Furthermore, I have added a jagged kind of railing to the stairs which is a development of my initial idea.
N.B. The view is set to "X Ray" so you can get a feel for the whole space as well as the stairs.

First Draft... Enter: The Stair

Continuing from the last post, I added stairs to my design. This was also the point where I decided to change the under datum storey. I felt the previous deign was a little simple and that it would be hard to add stairs to it.
This is what eventuated.

At this point in time, I really like the underground storey, but I feel the stairs in the above ground storey, while are interesting in concept, are plain in design.

First Draft... Early Days, yet.

These are my two draft images for the words Form and Fork.

The for the above datum storey are glass and concrete. The materials for the under datum storey is concrete that is rendered different shades of green and blue.

The first image is a side view of the entire structure. I really tried to focus on different shapes and angles, hence the weird dodecahedron shape on the top storey. Housed in this shape will be the studio space for artist 1. Below the surface, however, angles played a larger role. The shape you see connecting the datum to the underground is where the stairs will go, and the studio space is the room with the elongated dome shape on top.
The second image is a perspective section which I feel best shows off both studio spaces.

This first draft was based off this section:
